OLYMPIC TORCH RELAY: A Tradition Visits South Florida

The Dayaw Singers sang a number of patriotic songs that entertained and inspired the enthusiastic crowd while waiting for the Olympic Torch to pass in front of the Museum of Contemporary Arts in North Miami.  NANAY's participation in this event added color and music to the festivities.

Atlanta was the site of the last Olympics and Muhammad Ali took the precious flame carried in the silver lantern and lit the first torch, initiating the relay that began as a tradition in 1936. The Olympic Flame was carried by runners through Georgia and the Carolinas before arriving in Jacksonville. By the weekend, the flame was lighting torches being carried throughout the State of Florida.

Saturday was the South Florida trek. The flame traveled from Orlando by air to Fort Lauderdale. The Mother Flame lit the torch carried by the first of 227 runners needed to cover the 65 miles to Miami. At noon Saturday, the City of North Miami was awaiting arrival of the Olympic Flame with a cake weighing at least 1300 pounds, decorated as the American Flag.
