NANAY Opens New Satellite Center in South Florida

MIAMI- August 5, 2002

NANAY proudly announces the opening of its new satellite Community Center in South Dade, Florida. The new NANAY Center South, located at 12233 SW 112 Street, Miami, Florida, will be duplicating the supportive services that are currently being provided at the Asian Pacific American Community Center in North Miami.

?I am glad that we are now able to extend ourselves to elders who otherwise cannot access our present services due to distance,? says Joy Bruce, NANAY?s Founding President and CEO.  The new satellite center is located inside Crystal Plaza, about 30 miles away from the North Miami main center.

The anticipated purchase of a new 25-seater transport vehicle, through funding from the Department of Transportation, will allow the South Dade elderly residents to be picked up, so that they can avail of the services at the satellite center. NANAY currently has more than 270 registered elders and only one 15-seater van  that transports seniors all the way from Homestead to North Dade. With the addition of the new satellite center, NANAY hopes to be able to serve at least 150 more elders.

Health support and basic health services for uninsured elders will be provided, in addition to counseling, workshops, recreational activities and tai-chi exercise. A number of elders have already registered, and look forward to the much-needed services that will be provided initially through volunteers and donations from the community.

Florida Regional Executive Director Bennie Trinidad and NANAY Administrator Miguel Gozon will oversee the operations of both Centers in North Miami and South Dade. Volunteers Tessie Kenyon, Fatima Baker, Fannie Ramirez and Tino Arteza will be providing services and coordinating the NANAY Center South activities with the  South Dade Advisory Council, made up of 15 committed members, and a number of other volunteers from the community.

Interested elders may call the North Miami Center at (305) 981-3232 or the NANAY Center South at (305) 271-2090 for more information.

NANAY Center South is scheduled to have an Open House on August 24, 2002.
