NANAY, INC- MICHIGAN CHAPTER Report

The Michigan chapter was organized on May 1, 2002 by enthusiastic community leaders headed by its Regional Executive Director, Becky Tungol.  NANAY services are supported by FILAMCCO headed by Ed Navarra, Chairperson and the PACCM president, Dr. Efren Platon.  A Mother?s Day Luncheon last may 12, 2002 was the first project undertaken by NANAY-Michigan.  It was attended by more than 150 guests including senior citizens and youth.  It was a very emotional moment when the children expressed their  mothers as they offer them roses.  Everyone enjoyed dancing while others were competing in Karaoke singing.  It was a lot of fun for all the families.  Prizes were given to two oldest seniors, parents with the most children (winner had 13), guest that came from the farthest place (winner was from the Phil).  The Tagumpay Philippine Cultural Group entertained everyone with their Kuratsa and Tinikling dance. R. Anayas played the violin.

As far as activities, there will be joint birthday celebration on quarterly basis for all seniors and youth.  The first one was celebrated last September with an invited speaker from the Area Agency on Aging who provided materials and explained the  various supportive services available to seniors in different areas of the state.

Last December 14, 2002 NANAY joined FILAMCCO in celebrating Christmas by hosting a party for seniors and youth.  Kroger food certificates were distributed to all seniors.  During the party certificates of appreciation for the volunteers were awarded.  In the spirit of giving some seniors donated their food certificates to a special family who was a victim of an almost tragic car accident that had caused them financial hardship. Some contributed cash to the family.  Love fills the room during those moments when everyone just assured the family of the help we will provide them. What a great feeling it was!

There are monthly activities that are being planned like Sunday afternoon watching Pilipino movies , weekend  outings,  folk dancing and exercise, arts & crafts, computer classes for those interested and counseling.

If you know of any senior citizens or youth who may need our services please contact us @ 248-755-6119.

We need more volunteers to  help us set up supportive services in our community.  NANAY office is at the PACCM Building  17356 Northland Park Drive in Southfield, MI.  Website Address: www.nanay.com
