Florida Department of Health Lifts
Restrictions on Flu Vaccines
TALLAHASSEE-- January 26,
2005
Today, Florida Department of Health (DOH) Secretary
John O. Agwunobi, M.D., M.B.A., M.P.H., announced that, due to the
availability of adult and pediatric flu vaccines, all Floridians are now
eligible to receive vaccination. In addition, local providers seeking
vaccine for their patients or clients should call their local county health
department about supplies.
?After ensuring that all of our most vulnerable,
high-risk citizens were given ample opportunity to seek vaccination, we are
now able to offer flu vaccine to all Floridians,? Agwunobi said. ?With peak
flu season in Florida just beginning, we encourage everyone in Florida to
protect themselves from illness by seeking vaccination.?
?We thank everyone for their cooperation and patience
during this season?s shortage and hope that those who graciously stepped
aside will now receive a flu shot,? Agwunobi added.
Parents of children aged 6 months and older should
contact their pediatrician or local county health department for information
about vaccinations. Children who have received their first flu shot should
seek an appointment to receive a second dose.
In addition to
vaccination, continue following a few simple steps to reduce the probability
of contracting respiratory infections:
?
Clean hands often with soap and water, or an
alcohol-based hand cleanser.
? Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
? Stay home when you are sick and keep sick
children home.
? Avoid close contact with people who are ill, if
possible.
? Do not share eating utensils, drinking glasses,
towels or other personal items.
? Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when
you cough or sneeze.
