NANAY's
Health Expo and Kababayan Fest
at Griffing Park
in North Miami on
February
18, 2006.
T his one-day event included
FREE
health screening (blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol,
glaucoma testing, bone density screening and others), health and
community service booths, food and arts & crafts booths, and give-aways
from LBC, Money Gram and pharmaceutical industries including
Pfizer. Cultural shows featured
Musikong
Kawayan (Bamboo Ensemble)
of
Philippine Cultural Foundation Inc (PCFI)
Tampa,
AKI and I, Polynesian Review, Heart and Sol , Pinoy
Beat, and PhilAm Youth Cultural Dancers.
The Philippine Nurses Association were among the volunteers from
different counties and cities that assisted at the NANAY
HEALTHFEST .
The NANAY Health Expo
also served as an official
public
announcement of the formal
partnership between NANAY, Inc., NANAY Health Center and Miami
Beach Community Health Center.
NANAY Health Center
officially opened in North Miami
in 2004, and
last year
provided primary
health care services to 492 uninsured patients (195 Asians, 185
Haitians, 42 Hispanics, 56 African Americans, 14 Caucasians).
A total of 576 adults ( 158 Non Hispanic Whites, 107
Haitian/African Americans, 84 Hispanics, 116 Asians) were
vaccinated for hepatitis, influenza and/or pneumonia, 178 at
risk elderly (mostly Haitian) clients received home visits,
counseling, supportive services, and assistance in acquiring
government benefits, and 150 children (106 Haitians, 21
Hispanics, 22 Black, 1 Asian) received a total of 422
shots of vaccines.
NANAY's programs on
immunization are supported by a "Closing the Gap" grant
from the State of Florida Department of Health that addresses
health disparity. The first year of NANAY Health Center
operation was funded by a grant from the Health Foundation of
South Florida. NANAY also is funded by Alliance for Aging,
Alliance for Human Services, Miami-Dade County Office of
Community and Economic Development (OCED), and North Miami
Community Development Block Grant.
The operations of
NANAY Health Center was turned over to Miami Beach Community
Health Center (MBCHC) through a partnership agreement signed in
March 2006, to continue providing much needed preventive and
primary health care to the community.
Established in 1977 as a
federally funded community health center,
MBCHC
is
a fully integrated medical
institution
that offers
a broad spectrum of services for
patients of all ages. Through its newly established partnership
and memorandum of agreement with NANAY, MBCHC will be providing
primary medical care, program case management, family planning,
pharmacy, obstetrics/gynecology, dental, counseling programs,
pediatrics, health education programs, podiatry, prenatal care,
laboratory and immune support programs at
the NANAY
Health Center
site
in North Miami. Miami Beach Community Health
Center is a member of the National Association of Community
Health Centers and the Florida Association of Community Health
Centers. Governed by a community board of directors, it is a
JCAHO-accredited, not-for-profit corporation.
The
NANAY HEALTH EXPO
and KABABAYAN FEST was co-sponsored by
LBC
and MoneyGram,
that
serve to
link people to people through the
express delivery of services
including
cargo,
courier, money remittance and travel.
The
new LBC-MoneyGram partnership is
currently considering the possibility of opening up new branches
in Florida.
