NANAY Receives Funding for Loan Rescue Scam Outreach

February 7, 2011

Miami, Florida -  NANAY, Inc., a member organization of  the Asian American Federation of Florida (AAFF), received a $10,000 grant from the National CAPACD (Coalition of Asian Pacific Americans for Community Development) for marketing and community outreach. NANAY will be assisting families at-risk of foreclosure and loan rescue scams, not only in Miami-Dade County but throughout the State of Florida, in partnership with the regional members of AAFF  The funding is being provided as a result of the 111th United States Congress recognizing Florida as one of the top ten "hardest hit" areas in the nation for loan rescue scams.

To combat this issue, Congress asked NeighborWorks? America to launch a national public education campaign. The campaign will empower homeowners to protect themselves against loan modification scams, find trusted help and report illegal activity to authorities.

NeighborWorks? America is working with national, state and local partners on the ground including 235 community-based affiliates. Together, we will alert thousands of homeowners in communities at high-risk of scam  activity through real-life scam stories, fliers, postcards, e-cards, posters, print advertising, local PSAs, events, word-of-mouth and social media activity.

Homeowners who are contacted or deceived by a scam artist are urged to report it immediately by calling 1-888-995-HOPE (4673) or visiting www.LoanScamAlert.org.

Common scams include private attorneys and individuals "guaranteeing" homeowners they can stop the foreclosure process if the homeowner pays them upfront for their services. Once the payment is received the homeowner rarely, if ever, hears from the attorney or individual again.

Individuals who have been victims of loan rescue scams or are at-risk of foreclosure may contact NANAY at 1-888-271-7155  or any Department of Housing and Urban  Development certified foreclosure counseling agency in their area to receive free assistance.
